Same Curiosity

Tuesday afternoon somehow became Thursday morning.

I've basically lived inside Neon Chain v1.6 this week.

Weekly leaderboards. Better sign-in flow. A bunch of little UI fixes nobody will consciously notice, but everyone will feel. It finally feels like Neon Chain is growing beyond "here's a leaderboard" into "here's a reason to come back next week."

The weird part hasn't been writing code.

It's been Firebase.

I keep catching myself opening the dashboard just to see who's playing. Not names. Just dots on a map.

The first player from the Philippines made me grin.

Then Portugal showed up.

When I started writing BASIC on a Commodore 64 in 1983, I wasn't thinking about analytics dashboards. Hell, I wasn't even thinking about becoming a developer. I just wanted to do cool shit with this thing called "a computer."

Now I find myself checking Firebase the same way I used to check the player list after Hypnotitron and I emptied a Quake II server. Waiting for the next brave soul to connect.

Maybe that's why I care more about people coming back than I do about download numbers. A leaderboard only matters if somebody wants another shot at climbing it next week.

VantaQueen called while I was writing this. The Oregon coast won. Too cold. Too wet. Camping trip over.

Not exactly how either of us planned the week, but I won't complain about getting her home a couple days early.

In the meantime: a refrigerator full of Jolt, one more release candidate to build, and a leaderboard that goes live Sunday morning.
