Today is Friday, day one of my weekend, which means code and apparently finding entirely new reasons to lose sleep over Zed Invasion.
Sometimes Hypnotitron pisses me off so bad I want to reach through my computer and Gibbs slap him. He looks at a graybox proof of concept that I've been building for less than a week and basically gives me, "Meh. Nothing that hasn't been done before."
DUDE. IT'S A GRAYBOX.
But the asshole got inside my head. I spent yesterday thinking about what would make Zed Invasion more than another RTS with zombies until something finally clicked. I'm not telling you what it is, but I got home and immediately started trying to figure out if I could actually make it work.
The first attempts failed. Then I had something working perfectly during testing with code roughly like this:
gdscriptvar output := []var exit_code := OS.execute(command, args, output, true)if exit_code != 0: return {}Exported the game, ran the actual EXE and... nothing.
Turns out a helper file wasn't getting packaged with the game. Changed the approach, rebuilt it, ran it again. PASS. Kept screwing with it until sometime after 2am before finally going to bed.
Five hours later I was back at the computer. VantaQueen had coffee waiting for me, which I greatly appreciated, although I could already hear the Jolt Cola calling my name from the fridge.
It's still an experiment and I'm definitely not ready to talk about what I'm doing yet. But after a night of FAIL, change shit, FAIL, change more shit, PASS...
Yeah. I think there might be something here.
Hypnotitron still deserves the Gibbs slap as soon as I leave this doctor's appointment...
